News to Share…

Fun news to (finally) report…I’m creating a Pattern Sketchbook with Chronicle, and it’ll be coming out in Spring 2016. (Yay!) We’ll be focusing on pattern spotting in the world around us, and how inspiration becomes a purposeful repeat.

I know that sounds like a massively long time from now, but everything is actually due rather soon, so…here’s where you come in.

I have a nice outline coming together of who I’d love to include in this book, but I’m always on the hunt for new pattern designers, artists and illustrators- especially young talented ones. I’ve always been a strong believer of following the experienced creators as much as the fresh up-and-comers.

So, please feel free to submit work that follows these guidelines. I’d love to include 1 or 2 art students to the mix.

Fashion Tech & DIY: Print All Over Me

Over the past two weeks, several guy friends have emailed me about a new pattern-centric site. I’ve taken note. Who else has heard of Print All Over Me?

The concept behind this company’s a playful and inviting one, offering clothing templates, printing, and web storefront services to designers and fashion enthusiasts alike. The shapes are simple, yet interesting, in an American Apparel kind of way. We love the idea of simplifying the design process, where all you need to do is upload an image or a pattern to get started. Hopefully there will be quality control and a curatorial eye to keep the merchandise as fresh as the shapes.

Kudos and congrats to co-founders Jesse and Meredith Finkelstein on the launch. Excited to see how and where it evolves.

Kapitza, Kickstarter & Pattern Inspo

Lately, I’ve been a bit of a serial Kickstarter supporter. It’s very inspiring to poke around the platform and see who’s doing what and which crazy new concept is coming to life.

This morning, I backed Nicole and Petra Kapitza‘s latest book project, Geometric Two. These sisters are talented. They also share a serious love of pattern, design and geometry and run a multi-disciplinary design studio in London.

They’re experts in their field and have an impressive track record with their previous pattern publications, Geometric and Organic.

Their artworks are bright, colourful and minimalist, featuring abstract graphic art and flower illustrations in bold colour compositions and compelling arrangements.

Kapitza have gained a global following in the design world for their inspirational pattern art books and picture fonts, which are available from their beautifully designed online shop. They also published the critically acclaimed book Geometric in 2008.

Their deep love of nature is an ongoing concern, as can be seen in the ever growing Font and illustration collection, ‘We Love Nature’ and in their new project, Organic, which has been nominated for the Designs of the Year 2013 Award by the Design Museum London.

Around the Globe: Funhouse Facades

If I ever open a brick and mortar shop for Pattern Pulp, it’ll be a dizzying experience- in a good way. So, when I venture into concept stores, restaurants, museums and essentially any retail spot that tests convention, I get very excited. I’ve found some of the most visually arresting store and floor facades in Helsinki and Tokyo…I can now add Buenos Aires to the list.

Here are a few collages representing a textured way of life. From iron welded walls and punctuated waste bins to street-inspired stencils and kid-friendly wallpaper. All of these were spotted in Palermo Hollywood and Soho.

Our Favorite Patterns from 2012

It’s no secret we’re big fans of texture here at Pattern Pulp. Though we see thousands of patterns every year, here are some favorites that struck a chord from 2012.

What were some of yours?

1. Jonathan Saunders: “The drugged-up housewife has changed into a very wealthy, eccentric young lady.”

2. Mr. Porter’s collection of pocket squares.

3. Soft, organic watercolors that are reflective of nature.

4. Folk Clothing‘s spring prints for men.

5. Fun, arty-farty wallpaper from Minakaniwalls.

6. When plaids take a translucent turn.

7. Custhom’s embroidery; specifically, their CMYK stitched posters.

8. Buki Akib‘s Fela inspired bags (and wallpaper) at The Darkroom.

9. Carolina Herrera‘s fluidity and whimsical watercolors.

Gone to Lunch, Friendship Style

We’ve all had those days- the ones that are never-ending, where all you need is a pick-me-up to tackle the afternoon to-do list. The other day, I noticed a few peculiar (read: awesome) photos in my instagram feed from my friend Kristine. Her and her co-worker, Katie from Bitly, decided to spice up their lunch break with a trip to Anthropologie, and behold, the tumblr, Gone to Lunch was started. There’s a fun little patterned theme going on here- have a look, Paragon Sports is next!
