Trend: A Patchwork of Textures

Mismatched patchwork is continually getting a facelift and the cubist approach in these designs reveal the latest pairing of pattern on pattern. Always the curator of cool, the latest literary addition to Colette’s bookshop, Wanderung, by Edouard Baribeaud, reveals 24 pages of painted and drawn imaginary spaces. Experimenting with this technique in the home goods sector, Missoni Home has designed a typographic pillow to reveal softer contrasts. Enlarging these black and white patterns for a throw, Bensimon of Paris has included this menagerie in their latest collection of wares.

Book Review: Kenzo

Kenzo Takada arrived in Paris from Japan in 1965 and in 1970 he launched his own fashion house. Breathing new life in print and pattern, Kenzo rode the countercultural wave, proving fashion could be wild, colorful and innovative while simultaneously appealing to mass markets. With an innate skill for merging print influences from the East and West, Kenzo broke away from Parisian haute couture rules by creating a unique vocabulary all his own.

For 40 years Kenzo directed the house and in 2003 turned the artistic direction over to Antonio Marras. Kenzo’s first book is a true collectable, filled with romantic illustrations, lush textiles and playful pop-ups. For purchasing info, click here.

Fashion: Texturizing Florals

Seeing as how flower patterns are timeless, designers are constantly reinventing the wheel. One season they can be big, bright and cartoony while the next will have them dark, scratchy and mysterious. Here we have two paralleling prints from fashion and home that push the DIY expressionist look. The black, pink and orange outfit is from Flair Magazine and the muted pillows are part of Kenzo’s Fall/Winter collection. Which palette do you gravitate towards?

Follow-up: Cream & Cable

For those of you who are unaware, I’m spending this week in Paris doing pattern and trend scouting. Home Autour du Monde is always on my itinerary as the Bensimon home collection is magical and curated to perfection. You can imagine my delight when I happened upon this window. The furniture is covered in cable knit with amazing wintery pom poms. So exciting to see the home version of this trend translated so seamlessly.
