Vintage French Swatch Book (for sale)!

While trolling Laura Werkheiser’s wonderful tumblr page, I came across this jewel of an etsy find: A French swatch book full of vintage fabrics (ala 60’s & 70’s) from the houses of Lanvin, Givenchy, Balmain, Molyneux, and Carven.

While this incredible find is on sale for just under $1000, it seems like it belongs in a museum rather than a mass market office where everything will get remade and knocked off by next season. If you’re connected to RISD, FIT or any of the other wonderful fashion institutes out there, make a plea to your department to snag this beauty before it’s gone.

Sante Fe: Consumed & Informed

Michael Freitas Wood’s intricate patterns mounted onto wooden boxes are an interesting sight. Built with multiple overlapping grids of contrasting pigmented modeling paste, Wood explores, in his own unique way, the overwhelming amount of visual information we encounter on a daily basis from tv, the internet, digital images and motion pictures.

With hopes of breathing life into a static medium, Wood “offer[s] paintings that explore this issue by creating intensely compacted, highly charged visual designs.” For more info, click here.

Book Review: Cutting Edge of Wallpaper

If you’re into design, you’ve likely noticed the world of wallpaper has been steadily catapulting itself out from under the stuffy florals and wacky geometrics of our past.

Today, wallpaper can be traditional or modern, stretching boundaries of what once defined it. The Cutting Edge of Wallpaper pays tribute to this exciting trend, looking at the techniques, products and designers at the forefront of contemporary wallpaper design.

The book is beautifully comprehensive with sections covering the background and history of wallpaper, an exploration on how technology changes have affected the field presently and in the future, and a look at some exciting collaborations and intersections with architecture and art. Of course, there are an abundance of examples from some of today’s top and emerging talents in print and wallpaper design, all filtered into the categories of figurative, abstract, decorative, architectural, technical and Interactive.

San Francisco: Borchgrave's Paper Dresses

Isabelle de Borchgrave is a painter who also happens to love textiles and costume design. Painting intricate patterns onto rag paper, Borchgrave manipulates each design into a fantastic trompe l’oeil dress inspired by the lush depictions early iconic European fashion.

To see such fashion finery as depicted in the Renaissance, gowns worn by Elizabeth I and Marie-Antoinette, designed by grand couturiers Frederick Worth, Paul Poiret, Christian Dior, and Coco Chanel would be a treat unto themselves, but seeing them recreated in paper brings the wonder of these magnificent garments up to a whole new level.

This retrospective of Isabelle’s work is expansive and if you love fashion, costume history, paper art, patterns, or design in general, you’ll be sure to find something to enjoy about this show. Click here for more info.

San Francisco: Painted Roses

Sergio Lopez’s new collection of work, Painted Roses, presents soft nudes merging in and out of the background juxtaposed with patterns of feminine and delicate roses.

The varying positions of flowers on both the body and canvas hint at the dark, urban nature of floral tattoos, demonstrating how our real and perfect beauty is usually not visible or exposed. For more info on the show, click here.
