Hurricane Sandy




It’s hard to believe it’s already Wednesday. While my husband and I have been without power and heat in lower Manhattan, sensing the shortened days and prolonged nights, in a weird way, the week seems to have already evaporated. For the uber-connected and internet obsessed, there’s been a sense of calm merged with anxiety as a result of disconnection. One in three texts go through (if at all) and reserve power is a valuable asset. You have to make a decision, which platform’s most valuable- Twitter, Instagram or Facebook? For me, Twitter’s been the most informative, eating the least amount of data.

Bikes and vespas rule the streets and the days have been organized around power-charging runs and visits with friends. In a way, it’s kind of an interesting curve ball in the monotony of life’s routine, that said, I can’t even begin to imagine what would be, had the storm been any worse. Here are a few photos from my neighborhood: The Hudson river at 3pm before the storm hit, a bit of the aftermath of the Westside Highway, The lobby of Truffles, an apartment building two blocks away, and firefighters combing zone A during the storm surge.

We just relocated to my inlaws uptown. Hopefully everyone in the New York/New Jersey area’s safe and sound and hanging tight. My thoughts are with all of you.

New Ideas, New Projects




Happy Thursday! If you’ve been following along, you’ll notice we’ve been a bit quieter than usual. Hopefully you’re baring with us, as we’ve been hard at work on a new product- who doesn’t love late night photoshop and a shift in the juggle? So today, I’d love to invite you, the local Pattern Pulp community, to the prelaunch of Role Modolls, a passion project inspired by design, child development and an interest in identity and our future.

Role Modolls is an homage to the women of the 21st Century.  The women who can help shape our identities and influence future generations. Though we’re not going to be releasing til the holidays (fingers crossed!), the good people at One Medical wanted to host a party with me this Fall and I thought this would be a great way to share what I’ve been working on with my closest community.

We have 10 open spots, so rsvp if you’d like to join!

Freelance Creative Assistant

First and foremost, you’re Type A and extremely organized. You can write, strategize, source, research and help manage a production timeline in connection with a new project from Pattern Pulp Studios. Experience in coordinating events and a strong command of the digital sphere are a must. This is a shortish term project (4-6 weeks) in New York City and while the budget is not huge, compensation will be commensurate with experience. This is a great opportunity for someone that gets the Pattern Pulp aesthetic- we’re bold, bright and to the point.

Wanna Collaborate?




Hi guys. So the latest in my court. I’m working on something exciting- something that will hopefully be launching in the near future. I’ve realized that with my current work/life schedule, I need an extra hand and can’t do it all myself. Hopefully those hands are talented, reliable and fun to work with! This is a part-time gig, so if you’re already semi-committed to something, it shouldn’t be a problem. Freelance Graphic Designer

I’m looking for a sharp graphic designer- someone’s who’s willing to embrace and execute on colorful shapes, youthful vectors and interesting typography. Having a handle on Illustrator is very important. I’d also love to see a balance of masculine and feminine looking styles in your portfolio. Please don’t send corporate projects you’ve put finishing touches on- I’d like to see your personal design style- the kind of work that you do for fun once the clients have been taken care of.

This is a shortish term project (4-8 weeks), and ideally the candidate will be New York area based. You’ll need to be an Illustrator and Photoshop whiz- as you’ll be developing graphics and working on website layouts. Having an understanding of user experience is a plus.

The rate will be commiserate with experience. I’m looking for someone that gets the Pattern Pulp aesthetic- we’re bold, bright and to the point. That said, this project will be a different entity and separate of the site.

 

Freelance Product Manager

This person has worked with product design that’s tangible (not only web-based), setting and adhering to timelines as well as production both locally and abroad. It’d also be great if you have a bit of experience handling the particulars of live events. You’ll also be working on strategies related to production rollout, partnership collaborations and keeping track of all that’s incoming and outgoing.

This is a shortish term project (4-8 weeks), and ideally the candidate will be New York area based. If you come from the agency world, we’ll probably speak the same language, though someone with smaller shop experience is also great.

The rate will be commiserate with experience. I’m looking for someone that gets the Pattern Pulp aesthetic- we’re bold, bright and to the point. That said, this project will be a different entity and separate of the site.

Eleven Years Later




Eleven years ago, I was a student at George Washington University sitting in a computer programming class when the towers were struck. The days and weeks that followed were completely surreal: they were filled with shock, with sadness and a loss of innocence for my generation, one which was raised on the good fortune of naivety.

As I sit writing this, I’m surrounded by the sounds of construction. Roofs being replaced, garages being converted and most poignantly today, the new Freedom Tower going up. I recently moved to lower Manhattan and live a mile away from Ground Zero. The new structure is a part of everyone’s downtown existence. It’s tremendous, mirrored on all sides and reflects the ominous surrounding sky. In the process of unpacking last night, I came across this New Yorker from 2001. The cover has a bit of water damage, though it’s as striking today as it was eleven years ago.

Happy Fourth (or Fifth)!




While we don’t usually go missing without a heads up, this week was a fly-by-the-seat-of-your-pants week in terms of hopping the ferry for the beach. Thanks to a Sunday night of scouring Craigslist for cancelled trips, we scooped up a little last minute gem. Cheers to instant gratification and a nice work/play balance. Anyhow. Wherever you may be- have a wonderful week, we’ll be back very soon.
