Homegoods: Parvez Taj Light Cube

For those of you looking to beautify an office or home space, consider getting one of these Parvez Taj light box mosaics. I literally stopped and dragged these images to my desktop while perusing One Kings Lane this morning, they’re so beautiful. Each cube is stunningly modern and inspired by Riad Akka, a Moroccan treasure.

Merging functional lighting, graphics and photography, Yaj creates formal and conceptual motifs that engage issues of mass culture and comment on contemporary society, creating an imposing presence of irony, wit, and play. Luckily for you, they’re also on sale today- check ’em out before they’re gone!

Trend: Wound Up in Stitches

We’ve seen string used in design for a while now, though our interest was piqued earlier this year from the showings at both the Milan Furniture fair and ICFF. The woven trend, exemplified in these furniture examples, incorporates string and modern uses of embroidery with traditional weaving techniques. The results are an interesting homage to a time honored craft reminding us of all things cozy – warm sweaters and bulky blankets in a world where life feels more often chaotic.

Donna Wilson has teamed up with furniture company Ercol to create her one-off wound and wrapped pieces, contrasting the hard wood with the softness and comfort of the wool. Susanne Westphal’s two chairs – Stitch and Wooly – are a part of her final graduate project “The Discovery of Slowness” at the University of Art and Design Burg Gibiechenstein. Both pieces invite the sitter to take part in the chair’s creation by unraveling the yarn from “Wooly” and feeding it through the holes of “Stitch,” thus creating a unique design. This whole process forces the sitter to slow down, unwind and de-accelerate from their hectic life and observe how each chair becomes more comfortable and attractive with time and attention.

Typographic Ink Drawings at Ikea

For those of you who don’t know about Laurie Rosenwald, you’re missing out on a whole world of wit and creativity. I was first introduced to her at the PSFK conference several years ago and she blew the audience away with stories from her workshop, How to Make Mistakes on Purpose.

Ikea’s latest collection showcases the work of Laurie’s Beckman students. The above design reveals freeform typographic bedding– a playful approach that snubs perfectionism. Everyone who takes the class seems equally inspired, this is my favorite review: “Laurie’s workshop was great fun, fast, funky, backwards and rewarding! Cool lady!”

Color: Scholten & Baijings

These gradient pillows by Scholten & Baijings are a reminder of why it’s interesting to follow Dutch design. The asymmetry of the bands, hue and textures are elegantly curated and composed of Merino Wool. Wannekes sells the collection, click here to see more.
