Homegoods: Suki Cheema

Travel inspires all, and the upcoming Spring 2012 collection from Suki Cheema, the surface designer that once created patterns for Calvin Klein, Ralph Lauren and Diane Von Furstenberg has aligned himself with Indonesia. Keeping with the highly graphic styles we’ve grown accustomed to, the latest reel of textures are reminiscent of mosaics and tapestries.

The pillows above are from his current fall line, and as you can see, the reds are evolving into a brighter paletee just as the repetitions are becoming more intricate.

Here are a few pillows from Francis Jens Spitta to usher in the weekend. The inspiration for the collection originated while on a trip to Balboa Island and is the result of marker drawings. They’re beautiful, playful and a nice accent for any couch.

Do's & Don'ts of Brocade Coverings

There’s both a timelessness and modernity to brocade patterns. Just as camoflauge has evolved into a seasonly staple, so has the brocade for numerous industries, including stationary, lingerie, fashion and home decor.

There’s a bit of irony in today’s comparison, as the styled setting from this month’s Anthropologie catalogue juxtapose to the faded and taped Delta terminal reveals the do’s and don’ts when applying a large graphic repeat. When applied appropriately and in context, the design can sell the story and emit the appropriate mood. When applied carelessly, any notion of luxury is lost, making a mockery of the entire execution.

Homegoods: Velour Patchwork

Whenever I come across furniture accessories with a homemade feel, it gets the wheels turning- I’m motivated to pull out the sewing machine and make my own line of accessories. Over the past year, I’ve snapped several beautiful patchwork velour pillows and am ready to share the collective:

The first two bolster pillows combine children’s drawings of British foot soldiers and hand painted landscapes with purple fabric and gold rope trim. I found them in Hackney, on the east side of London at an indie designer shop along Shoreditch High St. The patchwork square pillows are from Butterfield on Wayland Square in Providence, RI and pay homage to the British flag by way of paisleys and peach. They’re soft, welcoming and remind me of an 80’s collection from Laura Ashley. The chaise lounge is from Merci in Paris and has been hanging out in my iphoto library for a while now…happily, it’s finally part of a family!

For the ikat fanatics out there, Gilt Groupe’s having a big sale today. As usual, their product styling’s quite sharp and is perfectly matched for this week’s east coast heat wave. There are some beautiful furniture and art pieces as well, it’s worth digging around if you’re in the market for something new.
