Budget Buys: Trove Sample Sale

I was first introduced to Trove by an architect friend, Annemarie Mörl, during the pre Pattern Pulp days. It was a quick remedy to my complaint about bare walls and her suggestion got me yearning for an opportunity to wallpaper any wall.

Fast forward and it’s been a treat to watch Trove’s collection expand and experiment with both materials and patterns. They’re also hosting a super sample sale this week which I’ll be checking out later today.

Homegoods: The Custhom Collection

There’s a beautiful simplicity to the Custhom collection from Thorsten Van Elten. Using thin overlapping vectors, each design is reminiscent of knit patterns and digital gray matter.

Catering to minimalist Scandinavian tastes, this is the first of a series of disjointed pixelated repeats I’ll be posting.

In line with the graphic styles we’ve all been seeing over the past six months, Hammocks and High Tea, a Brooklyn-based textile and design studio presents a vector-friendly collection of pillows. The patterns are beautiful, unexpected and might I say, European inspired.

Color: Digital Meets Tangible

I recently gave a talk on color in the digital sphere and it’s influence on tangible design. The audience was a mix of color-obsessed industry folks and continuing education creatives. Though this particular mood board didn’t make it’s way into my slideshow, it’s an interesting compilation of pixelated pastels. Taking a nod from computer themes, these Pokemon characters, Missoni pillows, Preen dresses and Repetto flats all tell a broader pink and magenta story.

Tying the theme together nicely, the Intro Now and Recco screen grabs from Mobile Patterns remind us to cross reference our influences for a an accurate depiction of what’s current and what’s to come.

Trend: Wearable Woodgrains

We’ve seen woodgrain vectors populating lampshades and cushions for a while now. Interestingly, Celine’s hopped on board, applyng a photo realistic pattern in her Fall collection. Mimicking this elongated directional pattern, this Hlaska wallet is a textural take and marketed towards men. Keeping it unisex, the gray version of this pattern, realized on a rug is the Finnish handiwork of Elina Helenius.

Budget Buy: Bark Decor Pillows

Now that we’re feeling the effects of Fall, cornhusks seem comforting and smoke signals, almost inviting. While perusing Pinterst this morning, I stumbled across the lovely work of Bark Decor, an eco-friendly design studio based out of Boston, MA.

The textures and triangles are in line with what we’ve been seeing for a while now, though the collage of illustration within wilderness adds a beautiful unexpected twist that’s less than naive. The pillows are crafty, unique, textured and affordable, as are the prints and and t-shirts. Have a look for yourself!
