Street Shots from an Abandoned Tattoo Parlor




The last time I was in London I spent more time walking above ground, as the weather was bright and my meetings were well spaced. Enroute from Selfridges to Lambs Conduit Street, I took many twists and turns, passing high street shops and indie store fronts. I passed an abandoned tattoo parlor with piles of tracing paper in the window. It felt rather raw. It’s hard to put my finger on it, but it was weird to see all the papers strewn about, knowing the designs were living on bodies around town. Almost made a larva to butterfly analogy in my head.

Gastón Caba




Gastón Caba is an artist and collaborator extraordinaire. His company, We   Patterns, produces cute, colorful repeats and illustrations. What you might not know though, is that Caba collaborates with his daughter Lara for a majority of their designs, converting her sketches and illustrations into polished repeats. The results are thoughtful, commercial and a refreshing combo of street meets junior. Check out our Q & A for a window into the world of this Buenos Aires family man.

Elena Giavaldi




Italian born, New York based designer and illustrator Elena Giavaldi and her delectable pattern work have made their way onto Pattern Pulp on multiple occasions. Her One Day, One Pattern project is wellspring of fresh geometric patterns that hint at retro and ethnic influences while maintaining a surefire modern appeal. Elena doesn’t limit herself to patterns, however; she also flexes her creative muscle designing book and magazine covers – a clear passion of hers – in addition to a variety of other creative pursuits. With a zeal for design such as Elena’s, it’s easy to imagine that she must find inspiration, well, everywhere, which is just one of the reasons she’s one of our favorites.

A Plaid Facelift for Babies




Every once in a while I’m tasked with designing baby patterns. While the American market predictably likes it’s pinks, blues, yellows and browns, categorized as barn animals, hearts or stars, it’s refreshing to see another take on the topic. Ratzer, a Danish home goods company’s recently sold out of their plaid baby line. The layout’s ethereal and soft in a very modern kind of way. I love the asymmetrical patchwork.
