There really is a job for everyone. When you’re a kid, you have no idea how far you can reach, and today’s feature truly illustrates that. Meet Sophie de Oliveira Barata, an artist and prosthetics designer living in Northwest London. After spending eight years working for a prosthetics manufacturer, she decided to go off on her own and create her own bespoke business.

“Making an alternative limb is like entering a child’s imagination and playing with their alter ego,” she said. “You’re trying to find the essence of the person.” In 2011, Sophie started The Alternative Limb Project, and unsurprisingly found interested clients. Each piece is taylor made and a collaboration with an artist, incorporating animatronics, 3-D printing, metalwork, carbon fibers and sometimes even mini drawers. “After losing a limb, a person isn’t the same…so this is a form of expression, of empowerment, a celebration…it’s their choice of how to complete their body.”
