Color Forecasting for SS15

CAUS_Color Report SS15

Back in May, I met with fellow board members on the CAUS team to hash out, discuss and explore Spring/Summer15 color palettes. Fast forward, and our work just arrived in them mail (which is always kind of thrilling!) in the form of silk swatches, dyed threads and theorized write-ups. SS15 Palette Discussions

It’s that time of year again…and the crew at CAUS combined forces this week to hash out concepts, theories and colorways for Spring/Summer 15. I’ve been on the board for a few years now and have grown to really value the team- it’s a place where I get to toss ideas around with other industry minds who have made a profession out of  color theory.

It’s also a welcome treat to jump out of the Pattern Pulp bubble and compare notes with others beyond my immediate professional circle. We’re an interesting group, generationally spanning several decades- and as you can imagine, our interests and life habits are as diverse as our backgrounds. Thematically we often clash, but when it comes down to the palettes, we speak the same language- which makes for lively debate and tough-skinned banter.

When I present, I’m rather literal and anchor my findings to upcoming events, releases and predictions, spanning art, culture, politics and digital media. I look at past predictions, current trends and global perspectives, then go with my gut on what will continue evolving and what needs to be wiped clean, and by whom. This year I presented four stories: Feminine Tension & Trauma, Sci-Fi Consumerism, Generation Redistribution & Transformative Botany.

If you’re interested in learning more about my reports or would like an in-house presentation, drop me a line. Thanks!

Give & Get with Jasmine Takanikos

I met Jasmine Takanikos at my first forecasting meeting at The Color Association. I’ll never forget her presentation- it had striking awareness and a somber mood. When she was done no one wanted to believe that nature was headed for the deep dive it’s been experiencing at an exponential rate. Luckily, I can say that our friendship’s been more optimistic, and might I say, refreshing. As a fellow brand strategist and trend forecaster, it’s fun to talk shop, hear her points of inspiration and share war stories. Her Valentines day picks are rooted in core beliefs, focusing on tactile objects that shape our reality. Surprising, not at all. Enjoy!

What Takanikos Would Love to Give: Endless flavor.

What Takanikos Would Love to Get: Palo Santo Wood– because it makes everything special and sacred. Also the ring of fire– because he knows that blue is beauty.

To be clear these are gifts that I want to get from someone madly in love with me- and me madly in love with them. Love is the coolest thing we have.

Book Review: Colour Forecasting

In our experiences, people are very curious about the world of forecasting. The research driving the fashion and textile industries is very complex, highly intuitive and frequently underestimated. Colour Forecasting is a great book for anyone curious about the field and looking to learn more.

The book discusses forecasting’s origins, the driving forces behind fashion and how it’s evolved in present day. Color terminology and some of the more subjective tools used by color forecasters are explained, and their strengths and weaknesses are compared. Additionally, process models are presented, revealing how forecasting methodologies are used to develop ‘color stories’.

An Afternoon with the Color Association

For those of you who know much we love the tech and internet worlds here at Pattern Pulp, it was both a pleasure and an honor to be able to present digital stories to The Color Association today. This amazing team of professionals was founded in 1915 and has evolved into an extraordinarily valuable resource for anyone working with color (and long production timelines).

Twice yearly, color professionals spanning nearly every industry join forces to forecast color decisions in the realm of brand identity, product, service, communications and spatial environments. Today I had the absolute pleasure of joining the team as a presenter and I can say without a doubt, it was an educational treat to collaborate, compare notes and nail down palettes. Thanks guys!
