Who here’s a collector of beautiful things? Living in New York, it’s a challenge storing every tote, invite, business card and piece of paper packaging that’s well designed, let alone clothing from a decade ago. I guess you could say I’m a bit of a hoarder. While cleaning up yesterday, I realized I have several French branded tote bags. They all incorporate hot pink. Here are two favorites. The cotton and ribbon one at the top is from Des Petits Hauts and the one below is a soft durable linen from Maison & Objet. Both have a cool whimsy to them, wouldn’t you say?

Orla Kiely Sample Sale




There are a lot of Orla Kiely fans out there and for those of you who hoard her geometric totes like there’s no tomorrow, you’ll be pleased to know that Gilt Fuse is selling a sampling of her collection today at a fraction of the price. Kiely is known for her 60s-inspired graphic prints of pears, flowers and stems. Over the past few years, Kiely’s success has allowed her to branch out into home and fashion, proving her commercial vitality in a crowded market. Watch out for her upcoming Spring/Summer collection, as the prints are delicate and fun and the cuts, refreshingly sophisticated.

Event: Thomas Paul Sample Sale

We seem to give One King’s Lane a lot of love here on Pattern Pulp, but it’s hard not to when bags like this pop up in our inbox! Today marks the start of Thomas Paul’s tote and pillow sample sale.  Paul got started as a textile intern at DKNY, then branched off as a colorist and designer for a silk mill, Bill Blass, and Calvin Klein. He then ultimately started his own line of patterned home goods and textiles. Fashion: Bold and Optimistic?

Diane Von Furstenberg’s latest window display showcases mismatched patterns and fabric textures throughout her dress and bag collections.  Referencing bright and iconic summer shapes, reminiscent of j.crew flip flops and Tory Burch tunics, DVF’s approach to the upcoming season is blaringly optimistic.  That being said, I’d be curious to see how the recession translates into next year’s spring/summer collection, as today’s economical dip was hardly a factor when these ensembles were designed over a year ago.

While in Silverlake last month, I stumbled across Sally Bartz’s collection of handbags under her newly founded company, Halsea.  Inspired by west coast colors and summer icons, Bartz’s crab monograms and bamboo squares decorate luggage, tote and weekend bags, providing a breath of fresh air from LA’s hipster styles.

UK designer, Peter Jensen has a playful eeriness to his work.  While he’s an acquired taste for some, his playful pairing of graphics and tailoring requires introspective buying on the customer’s part. This parrot pattern is representative of Jensen’s homage to the animal kingdom.  Carl M. Wellman infuses Brazilian, Italian, English and Japanese floral themes with biodegradable packaging for Le Marchand Du Cacao.  A stunning combination of high and low materials.
