Accessory Pairings for Work

Patternpulp_and_MMLF2

Let’s talk accessories and styling. I’ll start by saying that I’m not a style blogger. While I’m relentlessly observing and tracking creativity and taking tabs on art, accessories, design and fashion, I’m a behind-the-scenes girl, one that’s obsessed with how the dots connect.

I research and write about color and pattern trends for numerous fashion and technology companies and thought I’d share a few glimpses into my own wardrobe, as mixing and matching requires a new gameplan for every meeting. Have a read on The Ampersand Blog, as I shared my thoughts with the lovely ladies over at M.M. LAFLEUR.

Budget Buys: Sweet Shoes with Soul

I’m always on the lookout for a chic flat perfect for pounding the city pavement. Extraseed’s line of flats comes in a classic shape and a variety of subtle, wearable patterns that will add to, not distract from your outfit. As an added bonus, the shoes have a rich sustainable side: the soles are crafted from used car tires and the fabrics are the scrap remnants from garment factories – not that you could tell. At $38 a pop, you can feel good about doing something healthy for the environment, your closest, and of course, your wallet.

Fashion: African Kimonos

Our collective fascination with culture crossing is nothing new, though every now and then it’s important to sit up and take note of new projects. Serge Mouangue is an artist worthy of this attention, as proven by his Wafrica collection, a breathtaking cultural shakeup. This styled photoshoot combines the strength of bold and bright African textiles with the grace of the traditional Japanese Kimono. Strength and grace. Two contrasts united in women. They may appear different on the surface but they do share some cultural similarities. Both societies are very tribal and have a respect for hierarchy and an appreciation of the power of silence,” says Mouangue when asked about the theme of this project. “And then there are the differences. In Japan there is no improvisation. Here, improvisation can mean trouble, shame, difficulties. But in Africa, it means life, renewal, health and spirit.”

Fashion: Gemliners

Not long ago, AnOther Magazine released their Decade of Style issue. Celebrities from all walks of life donned the pages of this monumental influencer edition. Everyone from Santigold to Chloe Sevigny to Carine Roitfeld was photographed in shape-shifting pieces indicative of the past decade. One of the most memorable layouts captured Charlotte Gainsbourg in gem patterned underwear by Vivienne WestWood. Interestingly, the diamonds are framed with smaller diamonds, a trend that’s taken the wedding industry by storm over the past few years.  Mimicing this design, these Sylva & Cie ring stacks remind me of Westwood’s linear print pattern. Be it 2D or 3D, gems are a designer’s best friend, particularly when edgy, beautiful, and styled with precision.
