Making Textiles with Maruja

Here’s a little reminder of the tlc that goes into screen printing fabric. The step-by-step process can be tedious, but yields beautiful results. This pattern belongs to Maruja and was printed at a factory in Red Hook. I love how the video was made- it allows the viewer to follow along in the creative process and visualize how an illustration can become a textile.

Strawberryluna

Allison Glancey and Craig Seder are the designing, illustrating and screen printing husband & wife team behind strawberryluna. The Pittsburgh-based self described music and film nerds are self-taught when it comes to design and screen printing, but we think that that’s exactly what gives their work such a unique, distinct flavor. They first got their feet wet by making stunning gig posters which launched their collective career.

In addition to their silkscreened posters and prints, strawberryluna also does custom illustration work, CD & vinyl packaging, logos & identity packages, traditional-print ready pieces, web-ready icons and designs, t-shirt designs, and much more.

Book Review: Pulled

Mike Perry has created another awesome book, this time exploring the world of screen printing with Pulled.  Popularized by Andy Warhol in the 1960’s, screen printing continues to be a popular medium among artists for its remarkable versatility and relatively low cost. Perry has gathered together over 40 of today’s most talented designers who are each pushing the boundaries of this dynamic medium in their own, distinct way. Since the book is sure to get your creative juices flowing, an illustrated how-to section is also included so you can venture to explore screen printing on your own if you don’t already.

Though we missed the release party, the book is on sale and ready to fill your brain with inspiration!
