Dealtry x Of a Kind

Earlier this summer, I had the good fortune of meeting and dining with one of my favorite floral textile designers, Helen Dealtry. Over cous cous and vegetables, we talked pattern collaborations, industry politics, and where to do aerobic yoga here in New York. She casually mentioned working with Of a Kind (another favorite)…and I’m excited to finally share the release. Unsurprisingly, it’s a beautiful scarf (styled on our friend Chelsa Skees…to the left). Of a Kind x Pattern Pulp

It’s hard to keep track of everyone who references Of a Kind…it literally comes up in conversation all the time. The limited edition runs are unique, locally produced and curated with a cool, ethically-contious customer in mind. The photos and styling are extremely accessible, and the writing has a sharp point of view, which is a welcome relief in the sea of click-bait headlines. I personally think they balance the world of ecom and editorial beautifully. About a month ago, I got a chance to chat with Mattie Kahn, and she posted our Q&A on Friday. Textiles: Rainbow Dye Treatments

Last week I attended Portable’s Curator Conference here in Manhattan. The topics spanned art, culture, travel and tech and each speaker shared stories of their successes and failures creating and sharing content through various outlets. It should be said that the branding was stellar and was developed by RoANDCo. Additionally, the watercolor-splashed videos and print materials were translated simply and elegantly onto their tote bags (which I love and will carry until it breaks). Some of the stand-out presentations came from Carrie Scott of SHOWStudio, Gia Coppola, an extraordinary young film maker, Chris Corrado of Capsule, Josh Rubin of Cool Hunting and Piera & Philippe of Refinery29.

So back to the point of this post: Rainbow dyed textiles. I’ve been a fan for a while, as noted by this scarf purchase a few years back. The above sherbet-dyed knit is currently for sale from one of our favorite online retailers, Of a Kind. It was recently produced as a limited run by Creatures of Comfort, based in Los Angeles. Expect to see more of this style in the year to come, particularly in the home division. This technique is quite friendly for seating, pillows and bedding. Are you into it?

Trend: Chaotic & Melodic

Today’s feature is all about the crazy. Organized chaos will forever be a part of the design process. When I think the number of versions that get made before that final goes up and out, it’s remarkable. The artists and designers showcased today have honed their style documenting energy and movement through texture and while some of the pieces may look like a work in progress, they’re final, and in my opinion, beautiful.

Emulating musical notes, Tom Phillips reveals a love of mixed-media which reminds us a lot of Kandinsky‘s later work. Bringing a street angle to the mix we have Ben Quinn‘s graffiti markings. Translating that energy through embroidery, print and fashion, we have Isabel Marant’s SS12 shorts and a recent instagram of a worn and torn rug from Of a Kind‘s new Downtown office.

Give & Get with Claire Mazur

We’ve all heard about that friend we have to meet. There’s so much in common! Only one degree of separation! For me, that was Claire Mazur, the strikingly smart and funny co-founder of Of a Kind. When we finally caught up one day after work this past Fall, it was love at first sight, our friends were right, we had loads to share. From learned business practices to nerdy tech talk to fashion designers we were rooting for. If you haven’t already visited Of a Kind, do so- you won’t be disappointed, the limited edition runs are thoughtfully curated and a really wonderful thing for both emerging and established designers. Check out Claire’s picks!

What Mazur Would Love to Get: Since this is a fantasy land game, (right? there are no rules?) I will ask for this expensive piece of jewelry by Erica Weiner. I’m in love with this uncut emerald ring–the band and the setting are so classic, but the stunning color and organic shape of the stone are so not.

What Mazur Would Love to Give: Sticking with the no rules, can I be self-serving and give my boyfriend something that we’re selling on Of a Kind? Okay, great. I’d like to give him this Margherita iPhone Wallet by Landmarks & Lions. He refuses to put Siri in a case (“I just really value the naked phone experience!”) and it drives me insane because I’m sure he’s going to drop her and she’s really fragile. Plus, this has red stripes, and you know how you have to gift things that are red or pink on Valentine’s Day.
