Out with the old, in with the new. The old lukoil station’s been under construction for a few weeks. Padding the construction with a little art, this mural recently appeared. Assuming it’s about to get a lot more colorful. Will keep you posted!
Twitter Influencer: James Gulliver Hancock
James Gulliver Hancock has been an art devotee since his preschool days, when he daydreamed of complex images and freely drew to his heart’s content. Since then, he’s carried the personal declaration that he “feels horrible when he’s not drawing.”
Hancock’s been filling the world with his illustrations ever since, creating commissioned works for a bevy of impressive publications. His attention to detail and love for New York City has inspired his quest to draw every building in New York. His whimsical perceptions aren’t limited to paper, as they run rampant in his twitter feed. Follow along for a steady stream of interesting works, ideas, events and friendly banter.
Trend: Digitizied Collages
When making comparisons, it’s hard to tell that these two works are by artists from different sides of the world. On the tail of this morning’s Giles Hayter feature, it seems timely to talk about a trend we keep seeing in the art world: collage color-blocked patterns. The piece on the left is by Hayter and can be viewed in London’s Redchurch Gallery this week. The drawing on the right, entitled, Inconsequential Terrain, by Seong Chun, is represented by Mary Ryan Gallery in New York. This piece is just one of many amazing works on Artlog‘s roster. Another cool component at Artlog is ACP, their latest initiative to build a close community of art lovers and collectors both locally and globally. Both designs resemble organized chaos and remind us of slightly chaotic info graphics.
Trend: Office Inspired Typography
About two years ago, I was out dining at Gusto Organics with a few friends when I came across this multi-colored tip jar. It was an incredibly clever use of paperclips and I snapped a pic without giving it a second thought. Fast forward to the International Gift Fair from this past January. With the fabulous home goods editor, Amy Preiser by my side, we traversed aisle after aisle of decorative tchotchkes, taking note of what to expect for the coming year. When we hit the British gift booth, NPW, we stopped in our tracks at these number clips. Amy thought they were the cutest things she’d ever seen and I couldn’t believe the tip jar from years back was seeing a corporate revival. Fast forward five more months and we now have Barney’s spring catalog. The cover graphics showcase metallic type, reminiscent of unfolded paperclips. Be it hipster chic or kid-approved, it’s safe to say we’ll be seeing a lot more of this trusty office accessory over the coming year.
Street Finds: Shepard Fairey in NYC
Life’s all about timing and last night I stumbled upon quite a treat while walking to a meeting along Houston. In preparation for his upcoming New York show, Shepard Fairey tagged the now infamous wall along Houston and Bowery. (The same wall that the Os Gemeos team tagged last year). The artistic spectacle drew a curious crowd of creative types and tourists that watched in excited awe. Between touch ups, Fairey mingled with the crowd, posed for pictures and answered political charged questions about his work. If you’re in the neighborhood, definitely check it out- the final results are stunning.
Fashion Meets Football, Cupcake Style
Cupcakes. Who would’ve thought that with one transient shot on a Sex and the City episode, these delectable delights would still be trendy four years later. Before, there was only Magnolia. But now, there’s Billy’s, Crumbs, Georgetown, Buttercup Bake Shop, Cupcake Stop and Sprinkles. Even still, something’s been missing. When it comes to the slightly tougher, slightly rougher cupcakes, where could one turn? Butch Bakery.
