Morag Myerscough for J.Crew

Morag Myerscough_Jcrew

J.Crew recently teamed up with the talented Morag Myerscough to design their London storefront on Marylebone High Street. Here are a few images from their blog, shot by the talented Kasia Bobula, where Myerscough’s creative process is documented. As you can see, the colors bounce around with a vibrant fluidity. This piece is a playful exercise in color theory – one that has beautiful movement. Artistic brand partnerships are quite common these days – and a stellar one plays up to both strengths. We think this one falls under that category, what do you think?

Bags, Patterns & Global Innovation

You know who’s up their game? The folks at Baggu and the creative team at Herschel Supply. It almost looks as though they’ve taken a visit to Tokyo and have absorbed the product design and innovation abroad, as both brands have incorporated serious technical upgrades this coming season. Last year we did a Japanese bag round up, highlighting our finds at Tokyu HandsBeams and Porter, and the latest bags seem like a merging of decorative worlds- in terms of zippers, pouches, patterns and collage. If J.Crew’s version wasn’t so small (aka, built for kids), I’d be wearing it all winter long.

Liberty of London for J.Crew

Over the past few years, J.Crew’s evolved into both a curator and a collaborator, partnering with international brands to create unique product. This strategy’s proven successful as they’ve given exposure to companies looking to break into new markets. The latest partnership’s a fun one, as they’ve teamed up with the folks at Liberty of London to create a floral story for spring. The patterns transcend generations, covering both children’s and womenswear. Compared to last year’s Nike collaboration, it’s great to see another step into the American market- it proves how malleable and timeless Liberty’s prints are. I love the zip pouch and bikini. Are you a fan?

Printmaking at J.Crew

While browsing J.Crew’s blog, Behind the Line, I stumbled across a gem of a feature. David, who’s part of the creative team, walks you through the process of painting and pattern-making for product.

The process is fairly consistant across industries, though it’s quite fun following the pointed tips along the way: how a print is born, getting hands on, keeping the design simple and digitizing the repeat.

Holiday Gift Guide for Parents

Here’s hoping this holiday season’s a seamless balance of tradition, family, friends and special treats. For all of you last minute multi-taskers (ahem…), this week will be devoted to holiday gift guides. I’ll be taking off on a 10 day trip to Asia- Hong Kong, Shanghai and Tokyo (!) early tomorrow morning, and in lieu of regular scheduled programming, you’ll be getting gift guides all week. Enjoy!

Budget Buys: Fenton Fallon

Rarely do I get an email about a sale that’s worth trudging across town for- today was different. I woke up to a firestorm of replies from my girlfriends about a Fenton Fallon sample sale in Midtown. The brand’s statement pieces have been on my radar for years and should be on yours as well, as each design is unique, edgy and truly a breath of fresh air in an industry overrun by sameness and knockoffs. From collaborations with Barneys, Proenza Schouler, Thakoon and J.Crew, Dana Lorenz, the brain child behind the brand has outdone herself in both departments of quality and quantity.

With prices ranging from $5 to $100, it’s pretty obvious I went to town. If you’re near 36th and 8th today, pay the studio a visit- your wallet and your girlfriends (if you’re kind) will thank you.
