Today, I was in a zone. Once the basics were complete, I threw a few ink drawings together, collaged it up, and tinkered around with photoshop to see what would come. This is what happened. There’s lots of texture, overlap and some quiet storytelling.
Latifa Echakhch’s curent show at The Hammer’s Project embarks on a story of lost communication. Affixing hundreds of pages of carbon paper to a gallery wall, Echakhah has run a solvent over it, shedding the ink of it’s meaning. Her piece, À chaque stencil une revolution (for each stencil a revolution), uses the outdated mode of communication to reference its significant use in previous wars. Los Angeles based Sarah Anderson (aka, Sara Rara) and Luke Fischbeck are co-collaborators in a number of different forums. They have Lucky Dragons, an experimental music group; Glaciers of Nice, a small press and internet community; and the Sumi Ink Club. With a passion for collaboration, the duo takes this spirit to an impressive level with their collaborative drawing initiative, Sumi Ink Club. Founded in 2005, the group holds regular open meetings to execute topsy-turvy, detailed, collaborative drawings using ink on paper. Group drawing, as they see it, is an opportunity to open and fortify social interactions that bleed into everyday life. The exciting events are open to all, regardless of age, style, or skill.
