Trend: Meaningful Contradictions




Contradictions are commonplace for everyone. It doesn’t matter if you work in politics, law or are on year 10 of a loving relationship, every topic is debatable. Interestingly, the fashion and design worlds have started reinterpreting these ambiguities with their own form of graphic messaging. The results are crisp, blocky, handwritten and an exploration of popular symbolism, true vs. false and clever witticisms. Event: Vintage Cut & Paste

It’s Pattern Pulp’s last opportunity to jump on the band wagon.  Nearly everyone and their (design-minded) mother has forwarded me a link to the geeked-out graphic competition hosted by Cut&Paste this weekend. If not for out-of-state plans, I would be cheering along in the crowd of over-zealous artists, watching three wacom pens vigorously draw fifteen minute vignettes on projected screens.  Cut&Paste is a traveling competition that pits up and coming designers against each other in a festive and competitive environment. I figured I’d celebrate the occasion by posting the graphic I scrambled to make for Cut & Paste’s pre-competition in Boerum Hill two years ago.  My paper dolls made the first cut, but were sadly axed by the final round.  Check out the show online if you can’t make it to Webster Hall this Saturday.

Trend: Woven Minimalism

As excessive desires wain under the current economic climate, minimalist living shifts back into the spotlight.  Daniel Hedner, the mastermind behind Imaginary Office, a Swedish design and architecture firm, recently designed Pleats Please, a bare-bones approach to traditional seating.  Weaving only 19 stripes of upholstered polyurethane foam to a white coated steel pipe frame, Hedner built his creation using the macramé technique of knotting.  Illustrating this method on a flat surface, graphic designer Damien Correll, interlocks various arms together in Like Pattern, a print of hands holding hands. Utilizing a monochromatic palette and consistent stroke, Correll conveys a timeless sense of optimism, communicating strength in the basics.
