Comparisons + Visual Cues

In a world where we’re constantly consuming content in various mediums, it’s hard not to draw comparisons on an image-by-imgae basis. As you scroll through instagram, it’s interesting to see similarities between posts, especially when there’s no geographical or thematic connection between the accounts.

These two printed pieces struck me in a similar way, as they share a familiar energy yet come from divergent design worlds. Elephant is an art and culture magazine that’s printed and produced in the UK. It has fantastic coverage of the art world. Just below, is the New York City Ballet‘s Fall advertising campaign. In describing both spreads, they feel lyrical, lanky and muted. Do you also see a common thread?

Trend: Creativity Wrapped & Folded

Lately I’ve been following Daniel Arsham on Instagram. I enjoy watching his creative vision translated into sculpture. I also love his minimalist palette. For those unfamiliar with his work,  Arsham is a 31 year old contemporary American artist from Florida living in New York. (The similarities between our lives begin and end there).

If you’ve been following H&M’s collaboration with Maison Martin Margiela (photos via Guest of a Guest), you’ve probably noticed that they brought in Arsham for the launch party. Merging art and commerce, the two creative forces partnered up, proving big budgets, celebrities, fashion and creative exclusivity are still sexy and highly coveted. This concept’s obviously not a new one and when done well, both sides win. Expect to see lots of it next week at Art Basel.

On the peripheral creative radar, There Will Be Cake, an artistic ballet by Robin Cantrell, which was recently funded on Kickstarter had it’s first performance in Williamsburg two weeks ago. From my second-hand account, via my friend Michael, the wedding cake-themed performance sounded beautiful. It seemed like an interpretive rendition of this wrapped, neutral trend that’s circulating our airwaves as of late.
