Street Shots from Asia: Summer Spirals

It’s easy to write about circles, we could probably devote an entire blog to their popularity, symbolism and frequency. Advertisers, packagers and artisans are forever reinterpreting the shape. Here are a few snapshots I took in Asia. The bullseye and handbag is currently the global campaign for Louis Vuitton and the hombre ties are from Alfred Dunhill – both were retail windows at the Marina Bay Sands in Singapore. The muffin wrapper is just a piece of beautiful trash and the cigar leaves are from a market in Bagan, Myanmar.

Trend: Translucent Plaids

I’ve been into translucent plaids lately and when I stumbled upon Vittorio J’s Benson variety, I was drawn to the versatility of the pattern.

The Latest in Product Photography

We’ve all gotten used to white-washed backgrounds with shallow shadows thanks to Terry Richardson. Interestingly (and refreshingly), we’re starting to see an evolution of this high-low trend that incorporates a wash of color. From Sous Style’s weekly Tip Off shot by Lianna Tarantin where house-hold products become still-life perfection to Christopher Griffith‘s translation of Jill Lapore’s Battleground America to Tim Small’s The Milan’s Review, the sum of these examples simplify the story for a stark message translated through a punchy color backdrop.

Bringing commercialism (and Terry Richardson) back to the stage, Aldo’s latest campaign playfully incorporates type with a flat monochromatic background. Are you a fan?

Trends in Jewelry

We’re kicking off this afternoon with a guest post from our good friend Elizabeth of Swipely and Frost Yourself. She’s examining jewelry trends and sharing her thoughts.

Who remembers the accessory trend reports from 2009? (Frost Yourself does!) Those were the tabloid glory days when Micha Barton and Olivia Palermo’s necks were decked with collar-hugging jewels. The bib necklace was a mainstay and interestingly, is continuing strong throughout the rest of the year.

The recent crop, which has been making appearances around the web, sits closer to the collar and emphasizes varied tribal textures as well as jewel-toned colors. Some showcase a central vertical drop while others span an even 2″ to 3″ circumference all the way around.

So what’s different today? Styling. While the 2009 vintage were often featured against bare skin, under a crisp button-down or to perk up a scoop neck dress, today we’re seeing these necklaces layered over a tee, or even other necklaces for a fresh, maximalist take. What do you think? Will you be layering your bibs over a heather gray tee this summer?

Trend: Skeletal Prints

Skulls and skeletons have been a part of main stream media for a better part of the past decade. From beer commercials to high-end fashion campaigns to childrens accessories, the theme’s transcended nearly all categories, providing interesting imagery that’s more playful than edgy. Here’s the latest print from the Brussel-based design house, Piece of Chic, incorporating bones and rose petals.

Emitting the girl from the photo and becoming 2D, this street stencil (artist unknown) sends a similar vibe.

When we look at these accessories, there’s a lingering feeling that’s caught between Day of the Dead and high school science class. It’s exemplified by Dannijo’s Drew necklace and this xray bathingsuit from Black Milk Clothing.

It should be said that the catalyst for this post came after wading through Courtney Lewis‘ Mad Science Set on SVPPLY. It’s worth perusing, Lewis curates her categories with a playful and well-rounded eye.

Rounding out the category, these pants can be campy or cool depending on the printing technique. The leggings are by Tee And Cake and the x-ray shorts from Etsy. This butterfly structure is by Anneteen Denkelaar.

Trend: Eclectic Plates & Animal Oddities

You know when you’re looking for something, you’re never able to find it? I’ve been on the hunt for a few pieces to round out the apartment lately and during this relentless search, I’ve found some fantastic treasures. Off the heels of the animals acting as humans trend (yes, there’s a blog too), these plates from A & G Merch are a rather fun spin off of your grandmother’s china.

Here are a few favorites from the blog, a time suck, and small delight, similar to the charms of Cute Roulette.

And returning to the roots of this feature, here are beautifully styled plates from Sous Style. Showcasing the imperfect perfect, there’s a refreshing attainability to this mix and match trend.
