Frankie's Homage to Pattern

Happy Monday! With temperatures swinging from 34 to 55 today, it’s another confusing day for the east coasters. Many of us still have Fall fashion on the mind, but with imminent Spring on the horizon, we’re all on the cusp. Frankie’s latest issue hits a nice balance between the seasons- complimenting this sentiment.

Focusing on pattern through design, art, photography and fashion, the latest edition pays homage to texture. Showcasing work from Dinara Mirtalipova (the cover art), Elizabeth Olwen, Kendra Dandy and plates from Crown Lynn, Mikasa, Johnson of Australia and Casual Cream, the layouts are eclectic and the DIY activities, useful. It’s fun to see how various mediums showcase and celebrate the art of pattern. Pick up a copy, I personally think this issue’s a collector’s item.

Custhom's Digital Embroidery

I always look forward to emails from CUSTHOM. Their collections are unique and boundary-pushing, with meticulous technique and execution. You’re always left wondering, how did they pull that off and why don’t we have a store selling their products in the US?

Their latest launch, Aves, presents an Otomi pattern rooted in Mexican tradition with modern edge. Digital embroidery’s been used and the final product exists on both wallpaper and fabric. What’s most impressive, to me, at least, is the tonal aspects using a single color- through careful overlap, the objects have a 3D feeling.

Visiting the Pérez Art Museum

This past weekend, my husband and I swapped Manhattan’s polar vortex for Miami’s 85 degree sunshine. While we mostly sidetracked the South Beach Wine and Food Festival (except for this little gem), we took as much art, sand and sleep in as we could. On everyone’s recommendation, we visited the Pérez Art Museum, which was chock full of incredible work. The exhibitions were fascinating, vibrant and current. Sadly, I didn’t jot down all of the artists, but here are a few I was able to catch. Feel free to update the list.

Steven Alan's Subtle Spring Textures

Much of the time, we tend to focus on bold contrasts, like this, this and this. Though, subtleties are just as interesting, if not more wearable. Here are a few pieces from Steven Alan‘s spring delivery – the collection’s a sophisticated menagerie of neutrals. Wagner & M.M. Lafleur's Bird of Fortune

Off the heels of President’s Day, we thought we’d share a collaboration that hits an interesting cultural mark. Miyako, the creative director behind the women’s workwear brand, M.M. Lafleur, along with mixed media artist, Mark Wanger, have teamed up to create an impressive piece of wearable art.

Made entirely from collaged currency, Wanger’s peacock entitled, Bird of Fortune, is a departure from his regular editorial and media collaborations. Merging masculine and feminine along with capitalism and anarchy, this monetary creation is a beautiful deconstructed piece, filled with innuendos. Where Art, Fashion & Retail Meet

How magnificent are these window displays? Bergdorf Goodman’s hit it again, with a truly spectacular collection to beckon the Spring season. Following my personal mantra, that inspiration is rooted in the world of art and politics (and is eventually translated for the masses), the luxury department store has tapped 10 artists, creating one of it’s most successful collaborations to date.

It’s exciting to turn a new generation of artists loose in our windows. We like the idea of using our windows as an evolving gallery to reflect the synergy of art and fashion, says Linda Fargo, Bergdorf’s SVP. If you live in New York and haven’t been by to see the spectacle, put it on your to-do list, and if you live beyond Manhattan, check out these talented artists, they’re making waves today.
