Functional Creativity with MWM Studio

Matt W Moore’s a master at his craft and today we’re sharing one of our favorite MWM projects: DIY Ceramic Tile Sets. This collaboration with Core Deco’s an interesting example of functional creativity.

Walking us through the creative process, Moore invites us into his studio, sharing the mechanics behind the work. We particularly love this, as it lives beyond the customer purchase- once you buy a set, you become the designer, organizing, collaging and assembling the patterns to suit your particular taste. Meet Audrey Gelman, the woman of the hour. While Gelman’s not a textile designer, digital strategist or anthropologist, she’s quickly and quietly defining a voice and a vision for New York. Through her job as Scott Stringer’s press secretary, Terry Richardson’s partner, Esquire’s obsession, and Lena Dunham’s friend, she’s a fascinating dichotomy of opposites, and a clear example of the witty, intelligent, transparent, stylish set of gen Y’ers making their mark on culture (and social media) today.

This picture (from the NY Times) is a favorite- it’s authentic, charismatic and not overdone. Gelman’s wearing her sister’s dress, holding her beloved cat and standing beside her Payton Turner wallpaper. Thumbs up for a fun shoot, a beautiful pattern and bright future ahead.

Would you be inclined to pick up a marker if you had this poster on your wall? I came across this playful piece at Merci Merci in Paris last month. It’s organized chaos at it’s best, and entitled Coloriage Geant. This roll of paper is a playful gift for any kid at heart.

Textures in Wall Decor from Moonish

Decorators rejoice, there’s a new kid in town! Meet the folks behind Moonish, a new modular wall decor company sprout out of Brooklyn. Hand-dying and silk-screening marine grade plywood “tiles,” each square can be attached to a wall with a magnet and steel adhesive. I like this. I also like the patterns. They combine geometrics of traditional tiles with the warmth of wood in a fresh way. You can cover a wall, or simply accent a space, mixing and matching as you go. Very DIY friendly for the crafter/renovator in all of us.

Merav Danny's Textured Bowls

While visiting Tel Aviv last month, I spent some time exploring Nachalat Binyamin, a weekend artist’s market. I was on a bit of a mission. We we heading to my husband’s family for a few hour lunch, and I was on the hunt for a gift. As it goes, when you’re creatively opinionated and unclear of who’s on the receiving end, I go with something I’d love to get, toned down a bit. When I stumbled upon Merav Danny’s papier-mâché bowls, it was over and I was glued to the table for the rest of the fair. Merging street art, nature and feminine themes, each collage is a work of art worthy of extended distribution. I gravitated towards a torn paper camouflage bowl for the family and bought this cartoon piece for myself. Feels like Geoff Mcfetridge and Brian Rea had a baby, right? Trend: Tangram Sculptures

Every few weeks, we’re churning out tangram posts. It’s longevity mirrors that of the skull trend, as they’ve been around for years and aren’t disappearing anytime soon. Today’s feature highlights the 3D connectivity that occurs when you bring these triangles to life. I snapped the the top photo while at Anthropologie last week. The notebook’s a nice translation of the aesthetic and palette, by Papier Tigre, and the model’s wearing a rather intricate and impressive design by Sandra Backlund. Just below, we’re sharing a very special project by the folks at Pattern Makers. The art represents an info graphic about the frequency of blood groups in Singapore’s donor population. Amazing.
