Fashion: David David's Geometric Extraveganza

Downtown Music has a knack for finding sound visuals to accompany their music.  One of their latest collaborations pairs Santigold’s “I’m A Lady,” a Diplo remix featuring Amanda Blank, with David David’s S/S 09 Fashion collection.  The resulting product is a masterful film, directed by London talent Zaiba Jabbar.  The film was created to showcase David Saunder’s latest collection and was inspired by the fantasy world of Busby Berkley. Berkeley was famous during the 1930’s for his elaborate musical productions that often involved complex geometric patterns.  The parings all seem to make sense, as the mélange of brightly patterned tops and accessories coupled with heart shaped arm choreography is just the right dose of brightness to motivate us during these rough times.  “This season, like the rest of my work, is about complementing geometry and giving it fresh energy,”  a moto Saunders lives by.

Artist Profile: Cut-Out Couture with Dale Kaplan

Achieving Queen-Bee status of cut-out couture isn’t an easy feat, but for Dale Kaplan, a Brooklyn-based textile designer, it’s  a walk in the park, or shall we say playground.  Patch-working minimalist words with vintage fabrics, Kaplan has made a name for herself, adorning kids’ playrooms with whimsical pillows, clothing and window panels.  Inspired by nature, Kaplan often alludes to the notion of time, using spring and autumn to communicate her message.  Her creations can be found at ABC Home and Carpet, Garnet Hill, Wonk‘s Dumbo hub and other high-end children’s boutiques.

Fashion: Steering the Slopes

Snow gear has become so fashion forward that a trip to the slopes can be just as interesting for the people-watching as it is for the thrill-seeking.  Over the past few years, companies such as Burton and 686 have tapped young talent to bring graphic masterpieces to winter outerwear.  While fashion brands typically refer to global trends for inspiration, both of these companies have succeeded at risk-taking within trend categories for several seasons now- one of the many traits they share with their customer base.  “It’s fun to wear crazier colors when you’re on the slopes- you can border on obnoxious and get away with it,” says Kim Devall, a snowboarder from New York.  The above jackets by Burton and 686 exemplify a growing trend that fuses neons with photography.  Below are a few examples of other relevant trends within this season’s ski and snowboarding collections.

It’s quite liberating to know you can print customized textiles at your own leisure.  Oftentimes, good ideas die before seeing the light of day on account of complexities in production.  With the creation of Spoonflower, the design world’s latest solution to customizable DIY fabric, the final step has become as easy as hitting the send button.  As noted by Orli Sharaby, of PSFK, “Seems like a no brainer for the crafting community, and provides an exciting new option for anyone who simply wants a new set of curtains and can’t find exactly the right pattern to match their home’s decor.”
