Dealtry x Of a Kind

Earlier this summer, I had the good fortune of meeting and dining with one of my favorite floral textile designers, Helen Dealtry. Over cous cous and vegetables, we talked pattern collaborations, industry politics, and where to do aerobic yoga here in New York. She casually mentioned working with Of a Kind (another favorite)…and I’m excited to finally share the release. Unsurprisingly, it’s a beautiful scarf (styled on our friend Chelsa Skees…to the left). Marketing: Taylor Swift for Keds

How many of you clicked on Taylor Swift’s new video, Shake It Off, and were welcomed to Vevo with a 15 second promo for Swift’s new collaboration with Keds? I watched the ad and thought it was a very nice, safe, Americana collaboration. Keds are easy, approachable, and affordable for her core demographic of teenage girls.

While listening, she talked about patterns and leather laces…the line really stuck for me. It apparently stuck for my husband as well, as it was a topic of conversation this morning when we were both getting ready for work. So, while polka dots, stripes and florals might not be revolutionary when it comes to artistic collaborations, the video accompanying the marketing spot has hit millions since it’s release, and I’m guessing her words have resonated with many, like me- thus, making this interesting enough to write about. Fused Geometry & Floating Shapes

Trends are a funny thing to track. You can say that once they’ve gain momentum, they’re technically uncool and tacky (thank you Karl Lagerfeld for the insight), or that they’re simply an overarching theme hitting several sensory points. When you’re observing the things vibrating through culture, it’s important to look beyond the magazine headlines, as we all know that editors have word counts to fill and advertisers to please. It’s their job to sell quick digestible bites of content to keep us shopping…

When I wrap my head around a visual theme, I make sure to link as many worlds as possible…ranging from art and product to design, marketing and geography. Prisms have been an active element in the creative world for quite some time…they’ve gone from 3D to 2D and back again. Woven Planters & Textile Experiments

Ever since I laid eyes on Doug Johnston‘s rope bowls and planters, I’ve been more attuned to this type of textile coiling. The style lends itself beautifully to asymmetry and imperfect subtleties. Fast forward, and while perusing Mr Kitly, the Australian-based homewear site, I stumbled across work from a design studio based out of Brooklyn, called New Friends.

Founded by Alexandra Segreti and Kelly Rakowski, with a joint interest in textiles and housewears, their products combine weaving and a collage to create unique combinations and one-off pieces. Beyond the planters, if you’re int he market for a rug, you can’t go wrong with one of these beauties.
