Brimfield just ended. Did any of you go? This round I skipped out, as I’m spending a good deal of the summer cleaning out my grandparent’s house in Rhode Island. It’s grown into a beast of a project…and the range of treasures from 70 years of hoarding could rival any antique sale.

Here are a few snaps from the last round, when my friend Allison and I rented a car and made a road trip out of our Sunday. The laundry list of homegoods ranged from mismatched linen chairs and rustic tables to sequin cats, art deco plates and antique maps. How Flat Art Influenced Flat Design

While reviewing and researching palettes, I recently came across Ingeborg Panjer Roombeek‘s paintings. Roombeek’s a master with color, space, and geometric balance. This series, dating back to 2010, emulates the beauty of flat design – a digital trend that’s evolved out of skeumorphism over the past year. It’s interesting to see it from the angle of the art world, as opposed to the design world, as this ‘less is more, 2D meets 3D’ layout has gained serious momentum thanks to creative overhauls from Microsoft and the tech startup world. What do you think of the connection? Would you say Roombeek’s work contributed to this creative trend?

Using Color, Art & Energy to Heal

A month ago, we had a talk about slow movement as a trend– both in the art and consumerist worlds. Today, we’re continuing the conversation of gradual processes in regard to healing with the Brooklyn-based artist, Caroline Hwang. Her works were recently on display at the Beginnings Gallery in Greenpoint and beautifully illustrate physical and emotional systems through chromotherapy. Hwang’s shared the process behind her natural dye process- from the initial sketches to the final product, revealing color, calm and balance through geometry, quilting, rug-hooking and natural dyes. Here’s a quick collage of some footwear trends selling in Paris at the moment. Just the tip of the iceberg in terms of shots – but that’s what the blog’s all about – a few highlights! Between Bensimon, Vanessa Bruno, Sandro, Valentine Gauthier, Bonpoint, Surface to Air and Twins for Peace, we’re seeing florescent contrasts, beaded patterns, sport-inspired lacing, floral color-blocking, metallics, spikes and embroidered fringe.
