Hey Crew,

The latest: I’m writing a narrative for a video short exploring Product Design Through Pattern (nerdy but pretty stuff) and am looking for a few New York based folks beyond my circle, to weave into the piece – you’d have a short cameo on the topic, depending on your background and specialty.

You should have an opinion, a connection and a creative and cultural interest in patterns, either literally or figuratively. I’ll be including varied industries and perspectives on the topic.

If you’re interested in participating, please drop a line to mail [at] shaynakulik [dot] com, explaining your background with a link to some examples of your work. If it’s a good fit, I’ll be in touch this week, as we may start shooting as early as late next week.

Fashion Tech & DIY: Print All Over Me

Over the past two weeks, several guy friends have emailed me about a new pattern-centric site. I’ve taken note. Who else has heard of Print All Over Me?

The concept behind this company’s a playful and inviting one, offering clothing templates, printing, and web storefront services to designers and fashion enthusiasts alike. The shapes are simple, yet interesting, in an American Apparel kind of way. We love the idea of simplifying the design process, where all you need to do is upload an image or a pattern to get started. Hopefully there will be quality control and a curatorial eye to keep the merchandise as fresh as the shapes.

Kudos and congrats to co-founders Jesse and Meredith Finkelstein on the launch. Excited to see how and where it evolves.

A Background & Foreground Mashup

In celebration of Art Basel, which kicks off this week, W Magazine commissioned a collaboration between George Clooney, Girogio Armani, Yayoi Kusama, and Emma Summerton for their latest art-inspired cover story. The dots playfully balance Clooney’s serious stance and sharp suit, a fun juxtaposition of moods. Off the heels of the Louis Vuitton mashup, Kusama continues to swim between the art and commercial realms. The cover reminds us a bit of this, this and this, yet has a masculine timelessness that’s uniquely fresh. If you’d like to purchase the second print, the good folks at Artsy just released the details today.

An Obama Pattern from Chad

We’re taking a break from this week’s gallery links, as Emily, my wonderful editorial assistant is out of town, celebrating the last days of her twenties. Instead, I’m sharing a picture that recently came my way.

My friend Zhanna is traveling throughout Africa at the moment. She’s currently planted in Chad, visiting and documenting life within the refugee camps for the non profit she runs content for, HIAS. We have periodic check-ins to see how things are coming along, how she’s adapting to the change and what crazy things have happened that day. Here’s a photo she sent through, of course I got a kick out of it- it’s a guy in an Obama shirt. The textile is pretty abrupt in a rather obvious way. That said, you have to love the devotion by the wearer.

For a bit of background, here’s a shot of us- and a few of my other nearest and dearest friends over the Jewish New Year. Zhanna’s in the tank top and just as the picture was taken, was telling us all about her new job. Very exciting to see where it’s lead her. Maybe one day we’ll get to overlap on an adventure together beyond lower Manhattan. Fingers crossed.
