Web: The Plaidinum Countdown

vader-plaid

Tee Today, Gone Tomorrow is the motto for Tee Fury, the web’s latest solution for limited-edition, countdown t-shirts. Every midnight, a shirt goes for sale and once it sells out, or after 24 hours- whichever comes first, the tee is gone and no longer a commodity sold on the site.  This business structure appears to tap the human psyche’s need to win, particularly in the department of sales and exclusivity.  Today’s feature, entitled Plaidinum, by Dann Matthews, was forwarded along by Adam Hahn and is an interesting marriage of texture and film iconography.  For the Star Wars buffs out there, buy yours today, as Tee Today will move along, come May 13th…

Follow-up: Linear Jumbles

It’s always fascinating to track overlapping color palettes.  Now that we’re in the thick of spring and bright colors have again become the norm, it’s worth noting that linear jumbles are continuing to pop up around town and throughout the web.  This gouache painting by Pattern Pulp favorite, Amy Soczka, appeared on her blog, Things That Make My Day about a month ago.  Her delicate strokes have a tactile, organic vibe that are particularly heightened beside Depeche Mode’s album art, Sounds of the Universe.  Though it’s doubtful that the designers involved tapped each other for inspiration, it’s no coincidence that their environmental influences overlapped.

Fashion: Curious Neckwear from Alexander Olch

The motto, “unconventional meets conservative” is one that many brands aspire to achieve on a seasonal basis.  Alexander Olch, a filmmaker and designer from New York, has taken men’s neck ware by storm with his subtly vibrant patterns and tailoring.  After a brief browse through Bergdorf’s Men’s Department a few weeks back, it was obvious that Olch held his own beside Thom Brown and David Hart, two household names representative of upscale men’s fashion.  The greatest difference between these three designers was the fact that Olch’s designs playfully honored the bow tie without looking ancient or overly flamboyant.  After further research on Valet Magazine and The NYT’s fashion blog, The Moment, it’s quite obvious that this creative mastermind has a bright future ahead of him, check out his collection if you’re looking to give your professional wardrobe a face lift.

Olch’s ties nearly always possess a hidden surprise.  This secret ingredient makes a memorable impact as well as differentiates him from the commercial masses.  For a modern take on classic, here are two skinny Italian cashmere styles.

Trend: Pixel Mashing

Photography and graphic design have become so interconnected in today’s marketplace that one medium rarely exists without the other.  Websites like ffffound and qbn showcase the best and the brightest, overshadowing what many print monthlies used to accomplish.  By offering a 24/7 stream of creative inspiration, designers and critics alike have been able to familiarize themselves with what’s current.  This photo, taken by Bueller Designs in LA, displays a cluster of translucent dots that are a result water and light.  By merely adding saturation and a grid, brands like Burton and Bloomingdales prove that the transition from natural beauty to commercial glam can be a quick (and profitable) one.

Print: Environmental Prisms

Just as chefs have an intimate relationship with their food, graphic designers are often tied to their pixels.  Much of the time these creative atoms are invisible at final execution, however lately, as our collective romance with the digital world has grown, so has the size of these geometric marks.  Lisa Toff, the blogger behind MyConey, exemplifies this design style with her recently founded card company, prismPOP.  Using bright vectors and soy inks to communicate her illustrations, Toff proves that you can be environmentally conscious while making a bold creative statement.

Toff will be showcasing her latest collection in Brooklyn this Sunday at the Handmade Cavalcade in addition to the Renegade Craft Fair in early June.  For 20% off your next order (on etsy or in person), sign up for the mailing list and reference Pattern Pulp  – you’ll receive a coupon via e-mail.
