Follow-up: The Homemade Montage

In late July, photo montages were subtly making their mark in art magazines and facebook news feeds. Mixed images graphically displayed in film-like narratives are continuing to make the advertising rounds, as most recently displayed by this Intermix ad. Photobooth-like images convey moods in narrative succession, splicing stories together to paint a broad picture. Reminding us that every style comes full circle, this clipping from Alain Bergala‘s Brune/Blonde Paris exhibit reveals our collective love of blondes and advertising.

Twitter Influencer: Tad Carpenter

As the only child of two artists, Tad Carpenter grew up surrounded by art. Accordingly, it’s not much of a surprise that he’s created a profession out of his talent. Carpenter’s work is heavily influenced by mid-century design and inspired by toys. As you can imagine, this whimsical pairing has lead to numerous collaborations with everyone from Hallmark Cards and Chronicle Books to Kidrobot, Ray-Ban and The Corcoran Museum of Art. Carpenter collaborates with Dan Padavic and spends half of his time at Valhalla Studios creating new work and the other half teaching graphic designers and illustrators at the University of Kansas. His twitter feed relays his passion for sharing in a friendly and conversational manner, reminding us that a profession in design is filled with curiosity, color and corporate know-how.

Budget Buys: Build Your Bedroom

For those of you who are in habitual flux, sites like Gilt Groupe, One Kings Lane and Shelterpop are there to recommend high quality merchandise for eager e-com bargain hunters. Over the past few months, these sites have flirted with home-decorating gurus to bring a more cohesive look to the product, adding a curated theme to each sale. Today’s collaborative effort by Gilt Groupe and Shelterpop is a perfect example of a partnership done right. Sheets from John Robshaw are paired with Jardin du Jour vases beside Emu re-trouve chairs. The patchwork feel is harmonious and decorator approved. The first 5,000 members to sign up will also get a $10 Gilt credit.
