The picture’s palette combines beige, forrest green, dusty blue, brick and charcoal for a harmonious minimalist composition. A bit of wind, loose chiffon and linear architecture made for a memorable photo. Thanks Josh!
The past two weeks have been a bit manic in the Pattern Pulp office (hence the radio silence)! In an effort to relieve the guilt of not posting all of our goods we’ve been collecting- Milan furniture show finds, spring window displays, new trend series and color palettes, I’m sharing something a little personal to tide you over.
This week I’ll officially be getting married in Providence, RI, then celebrating in New York. While I don’t usually share the nitty gritty of my personal life, I figured a few “work in progress” shots wouldn’t hurt. From day one we’ve been collaborating with the fantastically diligent, creative and fun team that is You Plus Me Styling for an Alexander Wang meets patterned-themed affair.
Here are a few iphone shots I’ve taken along the way- from the dressing room at Barneys to fabric runs at Mood to table tents I’ve constructed from sheet music. Once everything settles, I’ll be back in business, til then, here’s a little graphic and musical treat to keep you occupied!

Trina Turk‘s a trailblazer in the pattern department. Her prints are vibrant and feminine and cover everything from tunics and shoes to couches and handbags. Today’s sale on Gilt Groupe presents a grounded collection of psychedelic florals and candy colored herringbone.
We’ve been a fan of Jen Stark’s for years now, as her amazing paper sculptures and drawings in a cacophony of psychedelic colors can’t help but fill you with a sense of wonder and delight. The Miami native has been creating art since she was a child and later earned a BFA degree in Fibers from the Maryland Institute College of Art. Though, it was a trip to the south of France and an encounter with the cheapest medium she could find – a pack of construction paper – that led her to explore her now distinctive oeuvre of mind-bending paper sculptures.
Her works, which include drawing and animation, tend to mirror designs found in nature, including geometry and mathematics and, as she explains, “are also based on replication and infinity as well as hypnotic, optical designs that mimic mandalas and sacred objects.” Jen’s twitter feed is a great way to see that the artist is just as colorful as her work, as she shares loads of colorful, psychedelic thoughts punctuated with quirky icons. It’s also a great place to stay abreast of her latest work and upcoming shows as her career continues to flourish. Follow along for a dose of colorful psychedelia.
If you’re a freelance graphic designer, you probably have a few Clients From Hell stories up your sleeve. You probably also have an ever-growing file filled with product design ideas that need completing. If you’ve thought about venturing out into the world of self-employment, you might find Steven Heller and Lita Talarico’s book, The Design Entrepreneur: Turning Graphic Design into Goods that Sell to be quite useful. The book is filled with inspirational and informative case studies and interviews from designers around the globe, such as Dave Eggers, Maira Kalman, Charles Spencer Anderson, Seymour Chwast, Jet Mous, Nicholas Callaway and Jordi Duró.
Each example explores the why, what and how of the creative process. Heller and Talarico have also included a section of ‘how-tos’ on being a design entrepreneur, ranging from concept to production.
