Alice Potter is an illustrator and textile designer based in London with a penchant for exploring the natural world – in particular British wildlife and birds. She works as a freelancer at The Swatch Loft supplying designs for fashion, in addition to steadily building her own independent practice. Her delightful drawings and patterns have shown up on tote bags and t-shirts and have been commissioned by the likes of Etsy UK and Cellardoor Magazine.

Of late, she’s focusing her attention on children’s book illustration, one of her long held interests. From the work we’ve seen, she has a bright career ahead. Follow along on twitter to share in her work and life adventures.

The Essence of Contemporary Illustration

In recent years, illustration has evolved from a purely service-oriented trade to an expressive, poetic, and esteemed voice in contemporary visual culture. Even today, it continues to flourish and grow as a creative discipline––especially in its more artistic forms. Editorial design increasingly uses illustration in place of photography because of the way it depicts and enriches content in a manner that offers an expanded dimension of communication. Illustrators Unlimited presents the work of the latest cutting-edge illustration talents scouted from around the world.

Color: Digital Meets Tangible

I recently gave a talk on color in the digital sphere and it’s influence on tangible design. The audience was a mix of color-obsessed industry folks and continuing education creatives. Though this particular mood board didn’t make it’s way into my slideshow, it’s an interesting compilation of pixelated pastels. Taking a nod from computer themes, these Pokemon characters, Missoni pillows, Preen dresses and Repetto flats all tell a broader pink and magenta story.

Tying the theme together nicely, the Intro Now and Recco screen grabs from Mobile Patterns remind us to cross reference our influences for a an accurate depiction of what’s current and what’s to come.

Men's Fashion: Styling Textures

Over the past 12 months I’ve collected lots of suiting swipes. Though the editorial’s not terribly current, the textures are timeless. Styled and shot for Dazed & Confused, Another Man, Calvin Klein and Zink, the black and white pairings are interchangeable, simplistic and a nice mixture of high and low design. Which patterns will you be wearing this Fall?

Follow-up: Angular & Sapphire Marketing

Back in March of 2010 we highlighted an emerging angular trend. Today we’re following up, as it doesn’t appear to be dissipating- it fact it’s continuing to evolve into other markets. We’ve seen the classic diamond shape shift to a crystal-like gem in the fashion, home and marketing industries and interesting, the color and “vectorfunk” style has been adapted to a new campaign. Bombay Sapphire’s latest creative initiative looks like an extension of Chase Bank’s design roll out in 2010. We wonder if it’s a coincidence, a collaboration or a copycat. Either way, the visuals are crisp, and somewhat interchangeable.
