Give & Get for Valentines Day




In preparation for Valentines day, I thought I’d do something a little different this year. Rather than ignore societal norms with Chinese take-out and a loving post-it note (a yearly tradition with my husband and I), I figured I’d throw the spotlight beyond the typical gift guide.

I reached out to many of the colorful characters I call friends, and got some fantastic responses back. Enjoy their picks, as we’d all love to give and get a little love, recognition and support throughout the year, not just next tuesday. And don’t worry we’re still going for Chinese!

I’ll kick it off!

What I’d Love to Give: My husband‘s stressed out. Work’s never-ending, the to-do list’s forever mounting. He deserves a Sunday afternoon of relaxation. I recently received a gift certificate to Great Jones Spa, here in NYC and spent a few hours just lounging in the pools. It was heavenly. I want him to do the same.

What I’d Love to Get: I’ve had my eye on this Claire Vivier bag for two months now. I saw it on a buyer’s blog and I’ve been anticipating it’s arrival at Steven Alan. I love that it’s practical and casual with colorful purpose. I might even gift it to myself this coming month.

Color: Evergreen Country Living




As much love as Brooklynites have for their borough, it sometimes seems as if everyone here is trying to escape to the greener side. I often find myself working on a website and then BAM I’m looking at real estate I can’t afford in the middle of nowhere, Maine. How did I leave photoshop and get to this Tumblr of photographs of fields? Mysterious. In this week’s post, I’m embracing my imaginary country life.

Micah Lidberg




The work in Micah Lidberg’s portfolio is abundantly colorful and frequently inspired by nature and dream-like worlds. His star has been steadily shining as his exposure grows in the gallery, product and editorial worlds. Nearly every drawing looks like it’s out of the playbook of Where the Wild Things Are, only infused with colorful, random twists that push the genre 10 leaps forward. When asked by Jessica Goldfond, of The Shiny Squirrel, what inspires him, Lidberg’s answer reminds us why you should trust your creative gut, “I’ve only had one memorable epiphany. A professor I had in England, Japser Goodall, told a bunch of us students to draw whatever we wanted to draw. It sounds silly that that sparked my epiphany, but it did the trick. I’ve been drawing furry dinosaurs and deranged clouds ever since.”

Steven Alan Presentation, FW2012




Fashion Week’s in full swing here in New York and to kick off, I’m sharing some photos I took at this morning’s Fall Winter 2012 presentation at Steven Alan.

The theme encompassed 1940’s Mexico City and the mix of metallics, textures and warm detailing translated into a beautifully cohesive collection throughout. This brand is one of my favorites (not because I did a bit of consulting work with them late last year), but because the team behind the clothing is one of the nicest, smartest, most down-to-earth teams I’ve encountered in the fashion business.

The backdrop mimicked cement in a soft and fluid way, providing the subtle texture needed to bounce off the fabrics. It made you feel like you could be within a cityscape or even an abstract painting.

And finally, I’ll leave you with the lovely and chic Maleeha Khan who’s recently joined the SA family to run social creative content.

Repetition Elsewhere: Cecilia Paredes




Every year there appears to be an adaptation of the wallflower as wallpaper trend. Nonetheless, it’s fascinating to see various artist interpretations.

Today, Lisa Toff passed along the work of Peruvian artist, Cecilia Paredes, by way of The Citrus Report.

The body paint is intricate, the gestural expression, compelling. Quite a nice balance of color and mixed media composition.

Art: Paintings & Personal Projects




How many of you made New Year’s resolutions?

In addition to getting healthy, making more time for family, collaborating on projects I love and washing my hair less…I decided it was time to return to the studio and make some art again. I spend a lot of time online. Too much, in fact. I wake up and fall asleep to a screen, I tweet, I instagram, I facebook, I pin. I curate and I design, however lately, I’ve been craving more tangible, tactile results…so I decided to sign up for a class, one with room for exploration.

Every Saturday through April I’ll be at SVA, taking an all-day painting class with Seth Michael Forman called Paint Your Own Vision. It’s a real commitment for me, though I’m excited and even a little nervous how it’ll all turn out- it’s quite a departure from the controlled medium of graphic design. Here are a few snapshots of work in progress…what were your New Years resolutions and are you keeping them?
