Pattern Pulp

Give & Get with Damian Claassens

Creativity, drive and family are all closely aligned with the persona that is Damian Claassens, Head of Creative at Profero in New York. We met in the Publicis offices this past summer, and while I didn’t directly work on Claassens’ team, it was evident that all those around him were relentless and dedicated visionaries. Passionate about sneakers, witty prose and his new home construction project, it’s easy to see where the inspiration for his valentines day picks lie. Enjoy!

What Claassens Would Love to Give: From the air, much of the world’s infrastructure can look beautiful, pattern-like. The runway maps in these posters, reduced to their minimum detail almost look like glyphs from a typeface. There are some cool examples from freeways. I love the simple clean lines and shapes from them.

What Claassens Would Love to Get: I wouldn’t mind getting one of these airport runway posters.

Give & Get with Jasmine Takanikos

I met Jasmine Takanikos at my first forecasting meeting at The Color Association. I’ll never forget her presentation- it had striking awareness and a somber mood. When she was done no one wanted to believe that nature was headed for the deep dive it’s been experiencing at an exponential rate. Luckily, I can say that our friendship’s been more optimistic, and might I say, refreshing. As a fellow brand strategist and trend forecaster, it’s fun to talk shop, hear her points of inspiration and share war stories. Her Valentines day picks are rooted in core beliefs, focusing on tactile objects that shape our reality. Surprising, not at all. Enjoy!

What Takanikos Would Love to Give: Endless flavor.

What Takanikos Would Love to Get: Palo Santo Wood– because it makes everything special and sacred. Also the ring of fire– because he knows that blue is beauty.

To be clear these are gifts that I want to get from someone madly in love with me- and me madly in love with them. Love is the coolest thing we have.

Finding Color Inspiration on Pinterest

I’m a huge fan of Pinterest. In addition to making mood boards for cataloging, I get a nice dose of inspiration from the ongoing feed, much like I do from ffffound, SVPPLY and We Heart It. One of the few differences I particularly enjoy is the content spread. Case and point- this blue and gray color story. Algorithms have woven this layout together, not humans, and for that I love the unpredictability of it all.

I figured I’d enlarge the photos in question and create a color palette on the fly to demonstrate the bizarre, yet beautiful combination that emerged organically. While one assists in the removal of ants from your kitchen, the other is Olivia Palermo, the socialite, actress and fashion icon. Unlikely worlds merging over periwinkle and gray. Love that.

Give & Get with Daniel Stedman

If you live in New York, you know Daniel Stedman‘s work.  As President of Northside Media Group and owner of The L Magazine, you have surely seen Daniel’s orange boxes throughout the city, a distribution channel that has resulted in a bi-weekly circulation of over 100,000 copies of this beloved local.  Stedman has also recently launched the beautiful, informative and collectible Brooklyn Magazine and operates the Northside Festival in Williamsburg. He’s as friendly as he is ambitious, with an arsenal of good taste and some fun valentines day picks today, have a look!

What Stedman Would Love to Give: Suspender tights are hot simple & sexy – perfect for Valentine’s Day!  These ones are super foxy.

What Stedman Would Love to Get: A romantic getaway somewhere close and easy, like Puerto Rico for a quick weekend – To get away from city life, and to have a little romantic time.  Here’s a link to a great resort.

Give & Get with Katie Welch

How many of you get the art of public relations? Katie Welch is an expert with a heart of gold.  When we first met, I knew nothing about the world of PR nor did I have any kind of skin routine. Two years later, I can happily say I do Rubberizing Bliss masks every Sunday night and have stopped “maintenancing” my own blemishes. As VP of Global Marketing at Bliss (dream job, right?), Katie transfers her enthusiasm for beauty to all of those around her- both physically and mentally. It’s no surprise her picks are literally pick-me-ups.

What Welch Would Love to Give: A fabulous gift to give is a subscription to H.Bloom, the flower service.  With this, Valentine’s Day can happen every month. I’d love to send this to my mother – she’s sent me a Valentine’s Day gift for 30-um-something years, so it’s the very least I can do.

What Welch Would Love to Get: I’m a huge fan of the artist Rob Ryan – if someone gave me this print, I would just be thrilled.  Every year, Ryan creates a special Valentine’s Day print “for the hopeless romantics out there” (his words, not mine … but I won’t disagree).  It just doesn’t get much sweeter than this!

(ALSO) This is also quite nice (and perhaps a gift to myself?). Krigler is a formerly-famous perfumer from 1904 with the most decadent fragrances.  This now available at The Plaza. Number 12 was Grace Kelly’s fragrance – a lovely lily of the valley scent.

Give & Get with Michael Galpert

Michael Galpert, co-founder of Aviary signs his e-mails “be well, do good” and lists his company’s mission as “to power the world’s creativity.”  This New Yorker and friend is equal parts entrepreneur, wanderlust and mensch.  Whether it’s vetting a business plan, planning an adventure or rallying his friends around a good cause, Michael’s boundless energy and enthusiasm for life is absolutely infectious. As you’ll see, it translates into his picks…

What Galpert Would Love to Give:I love the jambox, its simple and gets the job done. They are selling a limited edition version where they give $50 to charitywater + it is a pretty rad color-way win all around.

What Galpert Would Love to Get: I recently lost my wallet and havent replaced it with one yet. so I would happily receive a wallet as gift. This one from Of a Kind caught my eye recently because its simple but yet manly.
